What affects fuel consumption on a yacht?

Several factors drive real-world consumption beyond the base engine rating:

  • Yacht size & displacement — a heavier hull requires more power; a 90ft motor yacht can burn 4× more than a 50ft.
  • Cruising speed — fuel consumption rises roughly with the cube of speed. Dropping from 22 to 18 knots can cut consumption by 40%.
  • Weather & sea state — headwinds and choppy seas add 15–30% to fuel use. Beam or following winds on a sailing yacht can eliminate engine use entirely.
  • Hull condition — fouling (barnacles, algae) on the hull increases drag significantly, adding 10–20% fuel cost on a long season.
  • Engine load — running air conditioning, watermakers, and bow thrusters simultaneously can add 20–50 L/h on a large yacht.
  • Route profile — long open-sea passages at constant cruising speed are far more efficient than short hops with frequent acceleration and harbour manoeuvring.

This calculator uses average cruising consumption figures. For a precise APA, ask your captain for the vessel's actual fuel logs from the previous season.

What is APA in yacht charter?

The Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) is a budget paid upfront by charter guests to cover running costs during the trip: fuel, port fees, provisioning, and mooring. It typically represents 25–35% of the base charter fee. This calculator focuses on fuel and port costs, the two largest APA line items.

How is yacht fuel consumption calculated?

Motor yachts burn fuel proportional to distance: a 60ft motor yacht cruising at 22 knots consumes roughly 200L/h, or ~9L per nautical mile. Sailing yachts only use their engine near ports — typically 15–30 minutes per stop for maneuvering. Fuel prices vary by country and are updated weekly from live market data.

Mediterranean port fees

Port fees in the Med range from €60/night for a small sailing yacht in a quiet harbor, to €7,000+/night for a superyacht in Monaco or Porto Cervo during peak season. Anchorage (mouillage) is free in most areas — a great way to reduce APA costs on longer itineraries.

Fuel cost estimates are based on live diesel prices + marina markup. Port fees are indicative high-season rates. Always confirm with the capitainerie before booking. Scyllastar is a yacht management platform for captains and fleet managers.
